BOSU

Balance Training for Easy Living

Life is physically unchallenging for us city dwellers, too unchallenging in fact. The ground is relatively flat everywhere, and to make it safer, the surfaces are specially textured to prevent it from becomng too slippery when wet. This prevents people from slipping and falling, naturally. In nature, the ground is not flat and not specially textured to increase friction to prevent slipping. As a result it is tougher to walk and run on. However, the benefit our bodies reap from walking on natural ground is important. It causes us to switch on more muscles, to have greater awareness of our feet in order to remain balanced and stable. Walking on flat ground has caused certain muscles in our body to become inactive, specifically the muscles in our bum area. Weak gluteal muscles are the main culprit of many lower back and knee aches and pains.

The BOSU (Both Sides Utilized) adds the dimension of stability training to our strength, cardiovascular, flexibility, sports conditioning and core workouts. This brings huge benefits because it challenges the stabilizer muscles in our bodies that are otherwise never challenged even in the gym.

Think about it, most gyms still have benches where people lie and sit on while performing various types of weight lifting exercises. Certain muscles get strengthened; the person might get fitter, but still not have better balance that is definitely beneficial for all kinds of sports, trekking in the forest or mastering Parkour.

The BOSU’s dome surface is ever changing when you stand on it, training ankle stability or glutes. But stepping on the BOSU is not the only way to use it for training. You can lie on it and try performing sit-ups to challenge your core muscles even more or do push-ups on the flat side to challenge your shoulder stability. The possibilities are endless.

Training on the BOSU will improve your balance, kinesthetic awareness and proprioception. Best of all it adds loads of fun to usual workouts. Use the BOSU to add instability while weight lifting, performing yoga stances, aerobics or simply jump around on the surface. The BOSU is also fantastic for HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) that will build better cardiovascular fitness and melt fat faster than jogging endless kilometers.
