Exercise became an important part of my life when I went overseas to further my education at 17 years old. I would run long distance, participate in high impact aerobics, do pump classes with heavy weights. This would be a daily routine after work for most days of the week. I was only concerned about burning calories and was ignorant about correct posture, good technique and the kind of exercises suitable for my body. As a result, I suffered from recurrent episodes of severe lower back pain.

 

I am certainly blessed to have found a gym where there is “ALL in ONE”! A gym where one can come for rehabilitation, physiotherapy, lose weight, tone up and to stay healthy! Thank you very much Karen for changing my body for the better! I would recommend FTI to my patients and friends as this is a place where one can exercise “safely” and see positive results.

Due to excessive sports activities and incorrect posture during my earlier years, my L4-L5 lumbar is suffering from pre-matured degeneration. This led to lower back pain and inflexibility around the hip. Obviously, it affected my daily life and restricted my normal range of functional activities. I have tried physiotherapy, chiropractic, and TCM acupuncture but only obtained short-term brief relief, the lower back pain persisted. Through recommendation from Vivian, I began training at FTI since 2010.

 

FTI has developed a unique approach in helping its clients regain functional flexibility. The fitness relationship begins with a screening and testing of mobility, flexibility and stability prior to intervention plan. The most valuable part of the fitness regime is the philosophy of FTI to develop its clients to have the capacity to self-help. Through the process of interaction with the FTI specialists, clients gain knowledge of anatomy and are able to fix pain through trigger points relief and muscle activation. The constant search for better methods to help its clients is the competitive advantage of FTI.

Ever since I started gym 9 years ago, I have always engaged a personal trainer and they were senior PTs at California Fitness who were all ex-bodybuilders. The program they put me through gave me good muscle mass but I always felt ‘pudgy’. When my last trainer left California Fitness in 2009, I was in a dilemma. I wanted to stay on at, but most of the senior trainers had left. My trainer recommended Mattew. I was agreeable, but hesitant, as Mattew happens to be the coach of my dragon boat team as well. I have gone through the gym workouts he designed for the team which were the most punishing of all back and shoulder circuits. My ex-trainer and I swore by them as my back became very defined, much to the amazement of the other trainers at California Fitness but I certainly wasn’t looking forward to MORE of it!! Still I signed up with Mattew and that was the beginning of an enduring, challenging but enjoyable journey.

It started off as a birthday gift for my brother-in-law - I thought that he might appreciate a package at FTI (which I'd heard about in a rather roundabout fashion) for his 50th birthday. The package came with a free training session with Nelson for me. Nelson worked his magic; in that one free session he had me touching my toes (which I embarrassingly had not been able to do for some time), and had figured out what needed 'fixing' - and I was hooked.

 

With FTI, Mattew and Nelson, I think I've found that inspiration I'd been seeking! And oh yes, my cholesterol levels and blood pressure were all within normal after about 6 months at FTI.

I stopped exercising and accepted being out of shape as part of growing older.
I started feeling tired all the time and nurtured a recurring backache, which seemed to be a common complaint among my colleagues. Over the next 10 years, I gained about 12 kilograms. Three years ago, things took a sudden downturn during a medical mission trip in Bangladesh. I had been operating for 10 hours when I felt something go ‘pop’ in my back.

 

Nelson’s meticulous attention to correcting my form and maintaining safety assured me as I grew in both confidence and strength. I began to look forward to each training session as no two sessions involved the same machines, weights and stretchy rope contraptions. Nelson made it a point to keep things interesting and prevent my body from becoming complacent. So far, I have experienced gradual but marked improvements in strength, flexibility, endurance and perhaps coordination. My gait improved and I could perform longer operations without experiencing the same tightness and pain. My friends commented on a visible weight loss and most importantly, there was no more pain.

In Quarter IV/2014 I commenced training at FTI after my wife told me how professional the trainers in this institution are and after I had attended a workshop about release techniques by using FTI’s training balls. Nelson has shown me some exercises which helped me to release my muscles with the use of myofascial release techniques and to strengthen the muscles by both, simple exercises without machines and sophisticated exercises on special machines of FTI’s gym.

Four years ago when I hit 50 I knew that sooner or later I would become another health statistic. I worked long hours, never exercised, snacked too often and ate out too well at weekends.

 

Each session was thoughtfully planned by him making the training interesting, working with different equipment and varying the pace. He gave useful tips about diet and taught me how to release tight muscles which I never realized were troubling me. My backaches disappeared! I have more energy, a better sense of balance and am nimbler nowadays.

I was experiencing pain in my right knee, which was aggravated by running.  After my 2 pregnancies, I had found running the most effective way to reduce and maintain my weight. I was worried that I would no longer be able to run due to the knee pain. I was encouraged to try out FTI by a patient, who said it had changed her life. I decided to give FTI a try, and I have found significant benefit over the last 4 years that I have been training with Karen.
