Myofascial Release to improve movement, correct form, maximise life
Myofascial release is a deep tissue massage therapy for the treatment of skeletal muscle immobility and pain. This technique aims to restore the natural suppleness and elasticity of the fascia and muscles.
‘Myo’ means muscle and ‘fascia’ means band. Fascia is a complex connective tissue that resembles a 3 dimensional web that exist in all the soft organic tissues in the body.
From skeletal muscle to other muscle groups, the fascia surrounds, infuses and protects everything that exist interally. In its ideal condition, the fascia is soft and wavy. This provides a cushioning and supportive system allowing the body to move safely without restriction or pain. However, when physical and emotional trauma and the long term effects of bad posture, the fascia hardens up into a cluster, causing the other body parts to compensate its range and force the body out of alignment. It creates an enormous load on the affected area causing the impingement on the nerves, veins and lymphatic notes. The result is a crushing tension on the connecting tissues linked to the affected area aka knots/trigger points.
Think of it as a large stretchy fibre band that wraps around and in the entire muscular system. When inflicted pressure, tension or stress, knots/trigger points are created. Imagine tying a knot on a rubber strap, no matter how you pull and stretch the rubber strap, the knot will always be there to shorten the range of the strap. In order to “undo” the knot/trigger point, continuous pressure has to be applied at that point.
Tightened muscle tissues misalign the body posture by pulling the other muscle groups out of place. This will cause the body an extensive amount of pain to execute a movement. Due to the inability to manoeuvre, the body is unable to perform tasks correctly, therefore resulting to injury.
As the fascia is a complexed connective fibre web that exist in every internal parts of the body, the affected areas caused by trigger points could be extensive. For example, the pain on the neck could be caused by a trigger point in the scapula region as the entire fascia is connected. What could be a tightening in the hamstrings could be resolved by undoing the trigger point on the feet etc. Due to the nature of such connectivity, it is important that all trigger points are addressed to in order to maximise full body movement and minimise any body pain.
By releasing the tension and knots in these bio-tissues, pain caused by misalignment of the body can be eliminated. Without removing these knots/trigger points in the fascia tissues, the body will not be able to function efficiently due to its movement constraints.
Myofascial Release has been performed as early as the 1940s and have evolved into what is known in the modern world as Self Myofascial Release aka SMR. SMR is a method releasing of trigger points in the body by using your own weight and an equipment that can be used for myofascial release. With the advance in myofascia research, physicians and physiotherapists are regarding myofascial release an a solution to physical dysfunction. With self myofascial release, people are able to iron out these trigger points themselves.
However, many of the equipment designed for this purpose are unsafe to use without the supervision of a professional. Here at Functional Training Institute where safety and efficiency are prioritized, Dual Zone Myofascial Release and DZMR Therapy balls are created. With the combination of methodologies and DZMR Therapy Balls invented by Nelson Chong, founder of Functional Training Institute, everyone can now do self-releasing and activation of muscles in the comforts of their own homes safely.
