In June 2011, I noticed a dull knee pain on my outer left knee after my gym sessions. The pain got progressively worse and I had to stop my regular gym classes. I consulted my family doctor and obtained a referral to consult an orthopaedic. The orthopaedic sent me for an X-ray, ordered a series of physiotherapy sessions and advised that I: make lifestyle changes, ie. less high impact activities which will stress the knees, take Glucosamine supplements, which I had already been doing, go for arthroscopic (keyhole knee) surgery as he suspects that I have a tight knee cap which needs to be loosened. However this should be the last resort as recovery will take three to four months.

 

The X-rays showed both my knee joints to be normal, while the physiotherapist assessed that I had weak gluteal muscles and taught me some exercises to strengthen them. However after two months, the exercises did not alleviate my knee pain.

Being active in sports and a school squash representative prior to my medical conditions, the symptoms greatly restricted my ability to exercise as before and my weight increased from 45kg to 56.5kg in a matter of 2 years. I decided to join a gym at the end of 2007 to lose weight and improve my physical fitness, but only achieved limited results at first. Then in late February 2009, I had the good fortune of being assigned Mattew as my personal trainer, after which I made a tremendous leap forward towards attaining my goals. With Mattew’s help at California Fitness initially, and at the Functional Training Institute presently, I have lost 12 kg and developed greater muscle tone and strength, recovering the body I once had and rediscovering a range of motion that I thought I had lost. (Relatives and friends have been so impressed with my progress that even my 85-year old mother requested to train with Mattew and is now in the midst of a 12-session course with him to build up her own fitness level.

My daughter Jacqueline's weight was tipping at 54kg at age 10 which was almost twice the weight compared to children of her age before her personal training. Her self esteem was completely gone because of her size and bulging tummy. She was also being teased frequently by nicknames in school & even her brothers laughed at her for being a little fat kid.

 

Both Nelson & Karen were able to quickly identify the root cause of the problem that Jacqueline was malnutrition which affected her metabolism. My body said “Stop” and it materialized under the form a back injury. My doctor asked me to stop cold turkey all the workouts, for fear of deteriorating my back condition. In his view, martial arts and running were activities I could no longer practice ever again. So from working out at least twice a day, I had to go to none.

 

Then came along FTI. As much as I was very anxious about getting my injury sorted out, I certainly would not let anyone deal with it, unless I could have the utmost trust in the person’s capabilities.  And there could not have been a better person than Mattew.

 

And his routines have clearly been proving my doctor wrong over the past few months. The hours of training started to pay back quite rapidly: after 2+ months of training with Mattew’s routines, I was able to run Tokyo Marathon in an honourable time of 4h 25mins, with no prior running preparation. I was also able to resume my Muay Thai training shortly after. Icing on the cake (for any lady!), the diet programme that Mattew had me follow has helped lose 6 kg so far.

Some years back, I was diagnosed with ostopinic - a medical term indicative of low bone denisty. The doctor's adviced me that regular exercise was my only saving grace. I was caught completely off-guard as I had never been to a gym before.

 

I have been training with Karen for years now. I look forward to the sessions with her as she ensures that each session is uniquely crafted to help me maximize my potential. Together, we set challenging yet achievable fitness goals. Because of her efforts, I am stronger and more flexible. From having never lifted weights, today I can proudly lift a decent 10 kilograms. Weight training has significantly strengthened my bones and my bone density has shown remarkable improvement. I have better balance and most importantly, working out has become fun. From someone who had never stepped into a gym, it surprises me how exercise can be so addictive - if I miss a day I feel guilty. Karen has helped to find the gym buff in me, which I never knew existed.

At our first session, I explained to Nelson about my old ankle injury. Because of this injury, my left ankle is very weak and that affects my stability. My husband and I love dancing but I have never been able to do it well because of my lack of balance. As we discussed my injury and my fears, I became convinced that Nelson knew exactly what he was talking about and how to help me to get where I wanted to go. Perhaps Nelson could help me improve my balance. I had consulted an orthopaedic surgeon about my ankle problem and all he wanted to do was to operate on the ankle. The ankle hurts periodically and I have come to accept that the pain will always be there and my focus was on how to manage the pain. Perhaps Nelson could help me in this too. My wish list to Nelson began to grow as we talked and he explained to me how we could, over time, improve my physical well-being. Strangely enough, the weight issue became secondary. I just wanted to be a stronger person so I could dance better and have less pain in the process.
